|Frenchmen's Hole Falls. Ketchum/Newry, Maine|
This is a popular swimming hole on many a weekend, but during the week days a more secluded atmosphere can be obtained. Recent development of the Sunday River Ski Area has led an increased awareness to these small but refreshing falls. Only the first couple of miles of paved road has this modernistic Maine atmosphere resort condominiums . After the road turns to dirt the small rustic vacation or hunting cabins emerge dotted on small roadside plots. My favorite was labeled as :
"CAMP KWITCHURBELYAKIN "
44° 30’ 36”N 70° 55’ 06” W
903 ft. above sea level
Located 8 miles back on paved road turning into an improved dirt road. During the summer months is very passable even in a car. Winter or a muddy spring I do not know.
Swimming hole is large and deep. No life Guard.
Heading west from Rumford on Route 2 & Rt-5 for 16.5 miles until you reach the junction of Rt-26 in Newry. Go south pass this junction towards Bethel staying on Rt-2/5 &26 for another 3 miles. Entering on your right will be Sunday River Road, turn onto this road. From here your about 8.5 miles to the falls. Continue on Sunday River Road for 2.2 miles take a right at the fork, continue 1 mile and take another right at another fork, still on Sunday River Road drive another 4.5 miles, take a left over a small bridge and take your first right for .5 miles to the dirt parking area. The swimming hole and falls are across the way and 100' down stream.
