Sikorsky Model R-4

In 1941, Igor Sikorsky began producing the first military helicopter designated as the Model R-4. From the outset the Navy and Coast Guard interest for a functional vehicle that could land and take-off from ships was fulfilled in May 1943. While limited in capacity, speed and distance the R-4 performed ground work for the development of systems in the usage and control of this new aircraft so common today. Powered by a 180 hp radial piston engine it had a top air speed of 75 mph and a range of 130 miles. With a limited capacity of only 300 lbs, it barely allowed pilot and passenger transportation in its fabric covered fuselage.
