Sikorsky Model S-55/H-19"Chickasaw"

     
The Sikorsky S-55 was one of the first military, multi role, utility helicopters of the late 1940's. Its first flight was in April 1949, unique was the forward engine mount and power shaft extending up through the cabin connecting the rotor gear box. The piston driven, 800 hp engine provided a lift capacity for 3,000 lbs slung externally or room for 10 equipped infantry troops or (6) medivac causalities. Its 5 blade rotor and side cargo winch allowed stable hovering for rescue and cargo delivery. Its maximum air speed was 110 mph and of 360 miles. Versions of this helicopter are known as the "Chickasaw" "Whirlwind" and the "Defender."
