In need of a large capacity assault-transport helicopter, Sikorsky responded in 1950 with the model S-56, with its maiden flight in 1953. The military version was designated the CH-37 and known as the "Mojave." Powered by (2) Pratt&Whitney 1,900 hp piston engine, its maximum air speed is 130 mph, an operating range of 145 miles and the ability to externally lift 10,000 pounds. It was Sikorsky's first helicopter with (2) engines, with a carrying capacity of 26 troops and the ability lift small vehicles such as a jeeps. Access to the cargo area was through clam shell doors located as the nose of the aircraft or its side cargo door.
