Grumman F9F "Panther"

Developed in 1946, the Grumman F9F "Panther" was a single seat aircraft carrier based fighter. While initial prototypes were troubled with under-powered jet engines and fuel problems, the U.S. Navy received the first squadron on board the USS Franklin D Roosevelt in 1949 and stationed later on the USS Valley Forge which flew some of the first Korean War combat missions during July 1950. Powered by a single turbojet engine with 6,200 lbs of thrust, it had a maximum air speed of 575 mph and a range of 1,300 miles. Armed with (4) 20mm cannons and a payload capacity of (2) 500lb bombs or (6) 5" rockets. The "Panther" was a significant Naval jet aircraft during the rapidly changing technology of this era with approximately 600 built before ceasing production in 1953.
