Atomic Testing

Bikini Atoll

 
Brian A. Mochon from Lanesboro, MA, served in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class, from May 1945-1949. He served on the USS Bayfield (APA-33) during the last few months of WWII. In 1946, he was transferred to the USS Union (AKA-106) and deployed to Bikini Atoll for "Operation Cross Roads" the Atomic Bomb Testing in 1947. The USS Bayfield was utilized in collecting the crews from the various ships that sailed to Bikini Atoll for this famous study of radiation and blast effects upon ships and land base structures. Photographs were aquired through Naval Photgraphic Mates during the operations.
